Last night, Coinbase announced the listing of Coinbase Wrapped Staked ETH (cbETH) in the form of ERC-20 token. Users can now use staking Ether (ETH) while still earning rewards on the exchange.
Accordingly, cbETH can be sold or moved out of the platform, while ETH will remain locked until The Merge is completed. cbETH price won’t reflect the price of ETH, but represent staked ETH and staking interest as of September 16, when Coinbase initiated the conversion rate and balance of cbETH.
On Ethereum, staking requires users to lock their ETH. The locked ETH is later used to set up consensus, validate transactions, and secure the network. While being locked, user can’t trade that ETH.
Coinbase’s whitepaper outlined the current issues of ETH2.0 staking market, which they believe will affect negatively Ethereum. As of now, ETH2.0 staking seems to be dominated by Lido Finance, which accounts for 90% of the market share and is where 30% of the locked ETH of Ethereum 2.0 are staking.
Trading of cbETH/USD pair will be deployed in phases. Support for cbETH may be limited in some jurisdictions.
