Looking for the best transcript extensions? If yes, you have stumbled upon the right webpage.
Even though videos and podcasts are all the rage right now, written texts hold their own significance. It’s quite easy to translate written texts from one language to another, which is sadly not that easy to do with video and audio content.
Besides, written texts make it extremely easy to find any specific information and allow you to rework as many times as you want. And that is probably why written texts are irreplaceable in sectors that include research, education, and documentation.
But when it comes to transcribing video or audio content, things get really challenging. Manual transcription takes quite a lot of time and effort, and that’s where transcript extensions come into play.
However, finding a good transcript extension is still a task. There are hundreds of options out there, and each of them claims to be the best.
Trying out tool after tool to find the right one wouldn’t be the right approach, and I understand that. That’s why I have done the heavy lifting and rigorously tested out 100s of transcription extensions so you don’t have to.
Below, I have shared the list of the best transcription extensions that passed my testing and could be a great tool to revolutionize your workflow.
So, without any further ado, let’s get started –
Transcript
Transcript by Transcript.study is arguably the best transcription tool designed for students. One of the best features of this extension is its one-click question-solving function. This function provides detailed answers to almost any question, including complicated math equations.
This extension uses an advanced AI engine and search algorithm to provide accurate and detailed answers. Plus, the extension is exclusively optimized for 16 LMS (Learning Management System) platforms, including Brightspace, Apex Learning, and Blackboard. But sadly, it no longer supports McGraw Hill.
Advantages
- This tool is exclusively optimized for 16 LMS platforms with advanced support.
- The one-click problem-solving functionality makes finding solutions to complex concepts extremely easy.
- At $3.99 a month, it’s quite affordable.
- Besides its web-based extension, this tool is also available for Android and iOS devices. And thanks to its real-time syncing ability, you will always have uninterrupted access to all your notes and documents.
- Extremely easy to use.
However, Transcript lacks the core functionality that any transcript extension should boast – the ability to transcribe video or audio to text. Therefore, it cannot help you create notes of your online classes or prepare documentation of meetings.
Plus, although its advanced AI engine is amazing, you could get similar results from free AI chatbots such as ChatGPT or Google Bard.
Laxis
When it comes to taking records of online meetings, webinars, and classes, Laxis is a tool I can trust. It is a fantastic tool to help you prepare pre-meeting topics and agendas, get real-time transcription during meetings, and create notes.
Besides that, Laxis boasts an AI-augmented meeting highlight feature that provides important conversation insights within and across your conversation. Laxis’s web-based application is compatible with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Webex, whereas they specifically offer a Chrome extension for Google Meet.
Advantages
- Compatible with all major video conferencing services, including Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Zoom, and Webex.
- The free plan seems more than sufficient for most users.
- Laxis’s transcription tool is very efficient in producing accurate transcription with speaker recognition.
- Laxis’s advanced AI-based writer and chatbot are quite powerful.
- Quite simple and easy to use.
This tool is primarily designed to help you transcript online meetings and classes and not to transcript videos in general. Therefore, you cannot use Laxis to create transcriptions of videos on YouTube, Udemy, or any other platform.
Plus, another drawback of Laxis is that you need to have closed captions enabled for the tool to work properly. Otherwise, it will stop transcribing.
Notta
Notta is arguably one of the best transcribing tools that is capable of transcribing any sort of audio clip you have. So, whether you want to transcribe a YouTube video, podcast, video call, online meet, webinar, or any audio file, Notta can help you transcribe it in no time.
The best thing about Notta is that it is quite easy to use. Notta offers a web application, a Chrome extension, and mobile apps, making it available on almost all devices. However, their plans, policies, and selling practices made me skeptical about the product.
Advantages
- It is capable of transcribing audio files from almost any webpage. Plus, you can import any video or audio file from your PC for transcription.
- It offers a Notta bot that can provide real-time transcription of meetings in Zoom, Webex, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams.
- The AI summary generator does a decent job summarizing all the transcriptions and making quick notes.
For example, the free plan offered by Notta is more like a gimmick. They say they offer you 120 minutes/per month in the free plan, but you will be limited to only 3 minutes of real-time recording and online meeting transcription and 5 minutes of file-based and live screen transcription as a free user.
Plus, you will be asked to opt for the premium subscription through pop-ups, and their refund policy is awful.
MeetInOne
While MeetInOne isn’t primarily an extension to help you transcribe video or audio files, this tool could help you enhance your meeting experience. The best thing about MeetInOne is that this extension is completely free to use.
Advantages
- You don’t need to spend a single penny to use any of the features offered by the MeetInOne extension. MeetInOne is completely free to use.
- Some of the features, such as picture-in-picture, dark mode, meeting statistics, auto admit and reject requests, and others, are really helpful and can take your meeting experience to the next level.
- Even though the Meeting Recording feature is still under development, this feature can really be a lifesaver for many as it will make it easier to keep a record of all the meetings.
The MeetInOne extension boasts several amazing features, such as push-to-talk, dark mode, meeting statistics, improved account management, and more. But sadly, it only supports Google Meet.
But despite being a free and very handy tool, the tool hasn’t got enough popularity. And that’s why, I reckon, the developers are not working to improve this extension’s functionality and performance. As a result, this tool isn’t receiving any regular updates.
Meet Extension
Before proceeding further, let me clarify that Meet Extension isn’t a transcription tool. So, if you are looking for a tool to transcribe your meetings or videos in general, Meet Extension isn’t an option. But if you want to record your meetings or improve the overall meeting experience, you can consider this tool.
Meet Extension is a freemium tool with some solid features in the free tier. The premium features also look quite impressive and allow you to record meetings locally, download conversations, and auto-mute/unmute the mic.
Advantages
- Meet Extension’s meeting recording feature allows you to record and store all the meetings locally in MP4 formats.
- Its picture-in-picture function allows you to multitask on your PC without missing any visuals.
- Besides video recordings, Meet Extension also allows you to download chat history and the list of the participants.
The only thing I didn’t like about Meet Extension is that it collects data related to user activity, such as key logging, mouse position and clicks, and more. This looks quite sketchy to me.
Otter.ai
Otter.ai is arguably one of the best transcription services you can purchase right now. It is an amazing tool that you can use to take notes of online meetings, brainstorming sessions, and online lectures. Plus, its Otter.ai chat feature helps you get detailed answers to the meeting questions.
This tool further boasts the functionality of transcribing pre-recorded videos, audio files, and podcasts. Besides transcribing your meetings, Otter also records every meeting.
Advantages
- Otter is compatible with all major online meeting services, including Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams.
- Otter is available for Chrome, Android, and iOS. Plus, you can integrate it with Slack, Calendar, and Dropbox to sync everything easily.
- Otter doesn’t provide much in the free tier, yet the free plan is quite impressive compared to its rivals. You get 300 minutes of monthly transcription with 30 minutes per conversation and three pre-recorded audio and video files transcription for a lifetime.
Thanks to its ML-based algorithm, Otter is quite powerful and provides high-accuracy transcription. But still, this tool struggles with heavy accents or when multiple people are talking simultaneously.
Auto-Notes Taker
Auto-Notes Taker is an amazing transcription tool designed and developed by an individual developer named Nithin S. The sole purpose of creating this tool is to help students create effective notes, and that’s why this tool is free.
The tool is very lightweight and easy to use. However, this tool has some issues that must be considered before going for it.
Advantages
- One of the best things about this transcript extension is that it is completely free to use.
- Auto-Notes Taker is compatible with all major meeting platforms, including Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom Web.
- This free transcript extension also uses AI to generate quick notes and short summaries of important topics discussed in the meeting.
This tool has been developed by an individual developer, and therefore, it lacks proper customer support. So, you will be on your own if you encounter any issues, as the developers’ reply could take days.
Besides that, the last update this tool received was released in January 2021, and there is a high chance that this tool won’t get any updates soon. So, all the bugs and issues this tool possesses right now ain’t going to fix anytime soon.
Transkriptor
When it comes to automated transcription needs, Transkriptor is an extension that really shines. It is a premium transcription tool that has served over 100K customers globally. Transkriptor is a feature-rich tool with dozens of amazing features that help it stand apart from its rivals.
Advantages
- Transkriptor supports more than 100+ languages in which you can transcribe meetings and files and translate existing transcriptions.
- Transkriptor’s state-of-the-art AI algorithm is known for providing higher accuracy that could reach up to 99%.
- Transkriptor arguably has one of the best customer support, in my opinion. Though customer support isn’t available 24*7, you can connect with them in plenty of ways, such as live chat, email, etc.
Starting with the essential ones, Transkriptor helps you transcribe online meetings, seminars, and videos effortlessly with 99% of accuracy. Besides that, you can also upload your video or audio files to convert them to text in no time.
While it is not a big deal, Transkriptor captures and transcribes all the filler words such as umm, ahh, hmm, etc.
YTScribe
If you are primarily looking for a transcript extension to transcribe YouTube videos, YTScribe could be the perfect solution for you. It is a freemium tool. The free version of YTScribe looks quite solid to me, and if I didn’t have money, I would surely go with YTScribe’s free extension.
Advantages
- YTScribe does an amazing job of providing high-accuracy transcriptions, especially on videos that have clear audio and one narrator.
- The free extension of YTScribe is quite solid, and if you are willing to put some effort into manual editing, it will be good enough for you.
However, you will have to manually edit the transcription generated by free extension as it will not have proper punctuation and timestamps. YTScribe fixes this issue in the Pro subscription. But the Pro subscription appears a bit costly, especially if I compare it with other transcript extensions’ pricing and consider that YTScribe is limited to YouTube only.
That said, YTScribe appears slightly overpriced, especially when I compare it with other transcription services such as Transkriptor or Notta. The other services I mentioned are similarly priced but offer way more functionalities than YTScribe.
Get YouTube Transcript
As the name suggests, Get YouTube Transcript by CakeAI is a YouTube video transcript extension. This extension works effortlessly with all sorts of YouTube videos except the live stream, and the best thing is that it is quite easy to use.
This extension generates accurate transcriptions and allows you to export transcriptions in three formats – CSV, SRT, and TXT. If you opt for the CSV format, you will get the transcription with accurate timestamps.
Advantages
- This extension is quite robust and provides high-accuracy transcriptions with timestamps.
- With the free subscription, you would get one high-quality transcription per day for free. Plus, the transcription will have accurate timestamps and punctuation.
There is a free version of this extension, but it is limited to just one transcription a day. I have no problem with that, as I understand that the developer designed this product to earn some money, but this aggressive limit is also why this tool isn’t very popular.
Plus, even though I liked the tool and defended its limited free access, I wouldn’t recommend opting for its paid subscription. It is because its developers lack professionalism. The tool page doesn’t have proper information about billing, subscription, privacy practices, etc.
On top of that, many users have reported that they cannot cancel their subscriptions as there is no option.
Scribbl
Scribbl is a new transcription service that has impressed me a lot. Even though Scribbl currently only supports Google Meet, they are working to expand their compatibility with other platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
Scribbl doesn’t only help with high-accuracy transcription but also allows you to record all your meetings and create AI-based meeting notes. Plus, it offers an easy sharing option, allowing you to easily share all your videos and transcriptions.
Advantages of Scribbl
- Although Scribbl doesn’t offer telephonic customer support, its customer support is still one of the best compared to its rivals. You can connect with their support team via live chat or email.
- Scribbl is quite easy to use. But if you find it difficult, you can contact their customer support team or head to their blog section.
- Scribbl’s advanced AI algorithm breaks down your entire meeting discussion into smaller topics. This can be very helpful to review topics discussed in meetings.
The only drawback of Scribbl, in my opinion, is its pricing. It is quite costly compared to other tools in the market.
